UGI recently completed a project that utilizes natural gas-powered fuel cells to provide electric generation for Coherent Corp.’s manufacturing facility in Palmer Township, Pennsylvania. A global leader in materials, networking, and lasers for industrial, communications, electronics, and instrumentation markets, Coherent Corp. is headquartered in Saxonberg, Pennsylvania and operates in more than 20 countries around the world.

The Palmer Township manufacturing plant produces silicon carbide substrates used in electronic and technological applications. According to Coherent Corp., the process for manufacturing these substrates requires both furnaces that can generate extreme heat and accompanying cooling facilities.

The UGI-powered fuel cells will provide the necessary heating and cooling capabilities needed to power Coherent Corp.’s manufacturing process.

“The use of natural gas to generate electricity through fuel cells offers not only excellent reliability, but also environmental benefits,” Rhiannon Hazzard, UGI major accounts relationship manager, said.

This project is just one of many ways, UGI is helping customers around the world sustainably, and reliably power their businesses for generations to come.
